Everyone loves a good challenge. And, I think, everyone should have a book that they love, too.
This is an opportunity to discover new genres, new styles and different reading material. Perhaps you’ll discover a love for a new type of text, or author, or book – whatever you want to get from this, it’s a great way to extend your reading and develop new skills for the future.
The Reading Challenge blogs from Summer 2020 are on the 'Blog' page where I've updated what I read and you can comment on what you like reading, too.
So, what actually is the challenge?
The challenge is based on the long summer holiday break, but you don’t have to do it then – any time of the year will do. The aim is to work through ten different genres over ten weeks, reading a new book for each genre. This will not only introduce you to different genres, but different backgrounds, themes, ideas and writing styles. This is all about diversifying your reading and making the most of the books and texts available to young people today.

Here’s a calendar of the summer holiday months:
That’s ten weeks, from the start of July through to the end of August.
Each week, we'll read a book from one of the genres below, in this order:
1. Action/adventure
2. Classics
3. Comic/graphic novel (or a funny book)
4. Mystery/horror
5. Fantasy
6. Historical fiction
7. Science-fiction
8. Biographies
9. Non-fiction
10. Poetry/plays
I know, it seems like a long list – but, trust me, there will be something there that you will enjoy. Think back to the rich reading diet – do you really read all types of book? Do your shelves show all the different ‘nutrients’ needed for a ‘healthy’ reader?
Well, now you have an opportunity to really extend those reading habits.
It will work in quite a simple way: every week, I’ll post something on the blog explaining what I have read and whether I liked it or not. It would be great if you would comment and say something, however brief, about what you've read that week, so that we can get a discussion going. You can even ask if you're not sure what books to read for a particular genre, or you can tell us about your favourite book of all time. It would be great to hear from you.

So, please get involved - it will really help your reading and will be a bit of fun! Try to work through the ten genres, and it really would be wonderful if you could comment on the weekly blog - I'd love to know what you've been reading!
And, most of all, make sure you have a great summer holiday!
